When you print something on your printer, be sure to use the right products for the job.

Paper comes in different weights. However, the paper weight does not reflect the actual thickness of a piece of paper.

Weight refers to the pounds of a ream or 500 sheets of paper. A ream of 24lb bond does not weigh 24 pounds. Originally, a ream was made up of 500 of 25”x30” and not 8.5x11” sheets. With the uniform size and sheet count, printers knew the if the ream weighed 24 pounds, the paper was thicker than the paper in a ream that weighed 20 pounds.

Today, the most standard paper sizes are: Writing: 17”x22”, Book: 25x38”, Cover, 20”x28” and Cardboard 22x28” .

If a ream of 8.5”x11” writing paper is labeled 20lb bond, it means that the paper was cut from the original 17”x22” sheets which weighted 20 pounds per ream.

There is no single ideal paper weight. Instead, the choice of weight depends on the project at hand. In Europe and Australia, the paper weight is measured in grams per square meter or gsm.
